You know you want your nails done.
Then you go to schedule your appointment and suddenly you have questions.
Structured manicure? Builder gel? Gel-X? Hard gel? Acrylic? Gel manicure? Nail art?
Which one are you supposed to book?
Here’s the good news: you don’t need to become a nail technician before making a nail appointment.
You may know exactly how you want your nails to look without knowing the best technique to get there. Maybe you want to keep your natural nails. Maybe you want them longer. Maybe you have a photo saved on your phone. Or maybe you just know your nails need some attention.
If you already know you want Gel-X, acrylic or a structured manicure, great. If you don’t, start with what you want your nails to look and feel like. We can help you figure out the rest.
“I Want to Keep My Natural Nails”
If you like the length of your natural nails and don’t want extensions, tell us.
A regular manicure, gel manicure or structured manicure may be the right choice depending on your nails and what you’re trying to achieve.
A structured manicure uses builder gel to add structure to your natural nail. But that doesn’t mean you need to decide for yourself whether builder gel is what you need.
One of our clients had worn acrylics for years. Vianka recommended that she switch first to Gel-X and eventually to builder gel. She took Vianka’s advice and was glad she did.
Another client told us about a similar experience with Gabby. They talked about what she wanted, and Gabby made suggestions based on her nail type and the look she was going for.
That’s part of what your nail technician is there for. We can look at your nails, talk about what you want and help you decide what makes sense.
“I Want Longer Nails”
Now we’re talking about extensions, and Gel-X and acrylic are two of the options.
Both can give you longer nails, but they’re different systems. Your natural nails, the length and shape you want, your lifestyle and simply what you prefer can all play a part in deciding between them.
If you want to get into the differences, we wrote a separate guide about Gel-X vs. acrylic.
If you don’t want to get into the differences, that’s fine too.
Tell us what you’re going for. Better yet, bring us a photo.
“I Already Have Product on My Nails”
Please tell us when you schedule.
If you already have Gel-X, acrylic, hard gel, builder gel or another product on your nails, that can affect what needs to be done at your appointment. You may need a refill, a removal or a new set.
Know exactly what’s on your nails? Great.
Not sure? Tell us what you know and we’ll take a look.
“I Have a Picture of What I Want”
Perfect. We love pictures.
Sometimes a photo tells your nail technician much more than the name of a service ever could. We can see the length, shape, color, finish and design you’re going for and figure out how to create that look on your nails.
If the design requires nail art, we’ll talk about that too.
One of our recent clients said her technician’s attention to detail made her “vision come to life.”
Another summed up her appointment in three words:
“Exactly what I wanted!”
That’s hard to improve on.
“I Don’t Know What Color or Design I Want Yet”
That’s completely normal.
You don’t need to walk through the door knowing the exact shade, shape and finish you want.
One client told us her nail technician helped her find the perfect color for her vacation. Another came in for a structured manicure, was introduced to chrome during her appointment and loved it.
So bring your ideas. Bring screenshots. Or come in undecided. Choosing the details with your nail technician can be part of the appointment.
“I Want My Nails and Toes Done”
Absolutely.
And what you want on your hands doesn’t have to be what you want on your feet.
You might want a structured manicure with builder gel on your natural nails and a gel pedicure on your toes. Or maybe you want extensions and nail art on your hands but something simple on your feet.
We see plenty of appointments that combine different services for hands and feet.
So don’t make it more complicated than it needs to be. Figure out what you want for your hands, what you want for your feet, and choose the combination that comes closest.
“I Still Have No Idea What to Book”
Then you’ve understood the point of this article perfectly.
There are a lot of nail services today, and unless you work with nails every day, there’s no reason you should automatically know the difference between builder gel, hard gel, Gel-X, acrylic and everything else on the menu.
You know your nails. You know what you like. You may even know exactly what you want them to look like.
We’ll take it from there.
After all, one of our clients gave us probably the best review we could ask for:
“Exactly what I wanted!”
That’s the goal.
